Catch a trophy Marlin with Costa Rica Fishing Charters

Marlin

Marlin (Istiophoridae)

This fish has an elongated body, a spear-like bill, and a long rigid dorsal fin, extending forward to form a crest. They’re incredibly fast swimmers, reaching speeds of about 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph). They can reach in excess of 5 metres (16 ft) in length and 670 kilograms (1,500 lb) in weight.

Marlin are rarely caught for eating, so most modern sport fishermen release them after unhooking. Only the very largest marlin, which may set a record, are kept to be weighed on shore.

Records are most often recorded in the IGFA World Record Game Fish books. The current record has stood for some 20 years.

A true deep-sea fish, expect to travel out to blue-water fishing grounds.

Caught throughout the year.
Peak season – August and September
